WESTERN BUREAU:

Forty-five-year-old Clifford Guy, who was charged with wounding with intent after he allegedly chopped a co-worker over money, was denied bail when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magis-trate's Court on Tuesday.

The accused man of Bamboo district in St Ann was remanded as Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris was not convinced that he was forthcoming as to whether he had any previous convictions. RM Harris ordered a copy of his record and adjourned the matter until October 23 when she will revisit the issue of bail.

She also gave orders for Guy, who is without a lawyer, to be interviewed for legal aid.

The court was informed that the alleged attack occurred after the complainant's boss sent money for him to pay workers at the site.

However, Guy had suspicions that he was not paid what was due to him. The court was told Guy confronted the complainant at least two times before attacking him with a machete.

Allegations are that on August 22 the complainant was cooking breakfast at a location in Coral Gardens, St James, when he felt a sharp blow to his right hand. He turned around and allegedly saw the accused with a machete.

The complainant also noticed that he had been chopped as his arm was dangling. He became involved in a tussle with the accused but managed to escape. He was taken to MoBay Hope Medical Centre and was later transferred to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he spent four days.

The police were called to the scene where they saw Guy running away with what appeared to be blood on his clothes. He was accosted and questioned about the injury to the complainant.

He allegedly told the police, "Dat deh hand no suppose to have no use again".

Guy also allegedly took the police to where he had disposed of the machete and said he had acted in self-defence as the complainant had attacked him first. The court is still awaiting the medical report for the complainant.
