'Women at the Control' love dancehall

Millicent Lynch looks for another selection at Women at the Control Dance Party.

Millicent Lynch played last and she dropped some of the most up-to-the-minute dancehall at The Deck, Braemar Avenue, New Kingston, last Saturday night.

And she had some waistline moves to go with the music, which included Rampin' Shop and Champion Lover, to the additional delight of an already happy audience, which cheered on the final lady slated to play for the night.

special request

Lynch was certainly not the sole lover of the dancehall beat who selected at the Kiwanis Club of West St Andrew event. Janet Silvera, who preceded her and was also brought back by special request after Lynch, packed many a dancehall song into her set with a mixed CD, closing with D'Angel's Blaze and squeezing in a Mavado cut before handing over to Carole Beckford.

And Beckford was very much into deejay style dancehall music as well, dropping a Beenie Man double of Nuff Gal and the Sim Simma remix early in her set. She showed a liking for Buju Banton, B....... Rider, Driver A and I Wanna Be Loved among her cuts from the Gargamel's catalogue.

In the earlier going, Marilyn Bennett delivered some Vitamin S, courtesy of Baby Cham, and many a pair of arms was waved as she closed with Elephant Man's Signal Di Plane.

annoyance of the audience

It was Silvera, though, the songs on her CD mixed short and sharp, who delivered the most dancehall and utilised the microphone most, though not going on and on as many a selector tends to do, to the annoyance of the audience.

She brought sustained high energy to the party, dropping a merry leg in her purple outfit, bringing Greetings from MoBay, Half Pint style. The crowd cheered with each 1980s dancehall selection, including Buddy Bye and Ring The Alarm. Before Putting Up Resistance, Silvera requested and got a man to dance with her behind the decks.

music make you hot

And as Dirtsman chanted "we coming in hot this year", Silvera said "The music make you hot, but the wig me have on make me hotter". There was laughter all around. A few songs later Pocomania Day got the first 'pull up', she switched beats with Electric Boogie, honoured the King of Pop with Billie Jean before the D'Angel and Mavado cuts.

And just as how there was variety in Silvera's set, all the selectors offered up varied fare. Marilyn Bennett played Spotlight, while Dorothy Hobson requested that all Shake It Up Tonight and closed with a soul music that hit the spot. Beckford opened with Til Shiloh, and gave the dancers cause to Celebrate with some Hot Stuff.

In her second stint, Silvera went into dancehall style with a special, done just for her.
