GARY SUBRATIE's SHANGHAI PASS has been jacked up to top weight 57.0 kilos but still looks good in tomorrow afternoon's Nigel B. Nunes Memorial at 1820 metres. The four-year-old American-bred colt sparkled at exercise last Saturday morning, clocking a bullet 1:13.4 for six furlongs in preparation for his clash with local-bred AD INFINITUM. Anthony Nunes' AD INFINITUM is groping for form after finishing down the track in his only race this year, 13 lengths fourth behind 10-length winner RUM TALK at 1820 metres. Unlike AD INFINITUM, whose April 18 run has been his sole outing this season, SHANGHAI PASS has been pretty busy working his way up the ranks. His last effort was a big win, taking apart last year's Triple Crown winner and Superstakes runner-up ALSAFRA at 1500 metres. AD INFINITUM won last year's Superstakes, beating ALSAFRA but, apart from a close second-place run to RUM TALK in the 12-furlong Harry Jackson Memorial last Boxing Day, the ageing warrior has looked a shadow of himself. In fact, it was SATISFIER, a high-level claiming campaigner, who led AD INFINITUM to the furlong pole in the Harry Jackson before RUM TALK came calling. Nunes' runner hasn't impressed at exercise either, beaten by new stablemate GUAN YU in a five-furlong spin last Monday morning. With SHANGHAI PASS well within himself as a four-year-old, AD INFINITUM at seven, sitting just one kilo lighter, will have a tough task taking on the young and in-form American with Dane Nelson astride. HOMBRE, stepping up in class with 48.0 kilos after chasing home the impressive American filly, HONEYOFALADY, at 1500 metres last Saturday, could run a big race with the light impost. A hot pace is expected with ENGLISH STORM, BLUE MAGIC and TOBAGO taking their chances from in front. However, SHANGHAI PASS should be able to track any pace set down the backstretch before moving in for the kill. Champion jockey Omar Walker, who has peeled away from rival Nelson by three winners, should close the 10-race card with Wayne DaCosta's NEW KINGSTON. The American-bred gelding was all the rage as a 3-5 favourite last Saturday but ran smack into back-to-form UNDAUNTED at 1400 metres. Walker tried hard aboard NEW KINGSTON but UNDAUNTED clocked a super-fast 1:25.4 for a near three-length win. NEW KINGSTON's stablemates, YOJIMBO and SERGEANT STONEHAN, should keep VON ALMIGHTY honest on the lead before the American comes calling. Track Price Plus Pick-6 players should also look to the quartet of MISSILE in the second race at a mile; TIMOTHY SCOTT in the third at 1100 metres; PRODIGAL SON in the fourth at 1200 metres and BRAWTA in the sixth at 1400 metres. MISSILE ran creditably behind FUGITIVE at the distance last time out and has worked really well, 1:30.3 for 1400 metres. TIMOTHY SCOTT is back from a month in jail, returning on a $390,000 claiming tag where he finished less than four lengths fourth behind super-fit RED LION, MAGNIFICO and TWENTY NINE on June 13. PRODIGAL SON should go one better after losing to out-of-class TRACK STAR on last and BRAWTA needs only a decent start to land the sixth. |
