Bail extension for Antonnette Haughton-Cardenas

Popular attorney-at-law Antonnette Haughton-Cardenas had her bail extended when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday on fraud charges.

Haughton-Cardenas, who is accused of defrauding $7 million from one of her clients, pleaded not guilty to the charges and is to return to court on October 15.

She was charged on July 2 by detectives from the Fraud Squad following investigations into the case involving the complainant, 60-year-old farmer Samuel Rowe, who on October 3, 2006, was reportedly awarded $7 million in damages after he successfully sued one of the island's hospital for negligence.

Reports are that Rowe lost one of his legs following an accident while working on a construction site in 1996.

He was said to have lost his limb because of treatment he received while at the hospital.

It is alleged that Haughton-Cardenas collected the cheque but did not hand it over to Rowe.
