Flying dagger

We know that it is everyone's constitutional right to enjoy freedom of expression, but with every right comes boundaries and responsibility. The situation should be no different in dancehall music.

It was with both shock and disbelief that we watched a near-death clip last week of an incident that occurred at a local dance.

In the clip, the young woman was sitting in what appeared to be a small bathtub (not sure how it got there), while her dance partner ran up from some distance away, launched through the air like an acrobat and landed in the woman's head/neck region. It is not sure where he intended to land, but the woman was knocked out cold. It was not even immediately realised that something was wrong as the male dancer jumped on the unconscious woman, 'daggering' her.

When persons realised the seriousness of the situation, the woman was doused with several containers of water and slapped on the cheeks several times. Her head bobbled about lifelessly as the crowd tried to revive her. The insensitivity of the saga was unbelievable when the selector said over the microphone: "De gyal dead ... dekill her."

The male dancer and some others took up the unconscious woman and ran from the dance, presumably to get her medical attention.

It is not sure if the woman survived or not, but in any event, let us all act like civilised people and prevent any recurrence. It's bad enough that dangerous dancehall daggering is fracturing penises already. let it not start killing our women and mothers.
