Fothergill in fine form over 400m

OLYMPIAN Allodin Fothergill was in fine form on the weekend as he clocked 46.10 seconds to win the men's 400 metres on last Saturday's final day of the three-day Mid Eastern Athletics Conference (MEAC) Championships on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Hampton University's women won their seventh consecutive conference title aided by a double win from NCAA 400 metres indoor champion Francena McCororory, who won the 200 metres in 23.23 seconds and the 400 metres in 51.75 seconds. they won the title with 119 points. University of Maryland Eastern Shores (UMES) ended second with 109 and Norfolk State University (106), third.

Norfolk's had their fifth consecutive win in the men's division as they totalled 133.5 points to turn back Hampton (104) and UMES 93.5.

Fothergill, the former G.C. Foster College quarter miler, competing for UMES, made up for a dismal indoor season as he scored a convincing win and also posted a qualifying mark for the Division I Region Meet which is set for the same venue in two weeks.

Fothergill maintained his good form in the final event of the meet, the 4x400 metres, as after getting the baton in fourth position he ran a blinder to pace his team to victory in 3:07.83 and a regional qualifying mark.

Former Vere Technical and Carifta representative Kayon Smith was the only other Jamaican to finish among the medals. competing for Coppin State University, he bagged silver in the 800 metres in 1:51.15. He led for the majority of the race and only lost out by inches as the fast-finishing Donte Holmes of Delaware States University won in 1:51.13.

There were some good results for Jamaican females at the meet. Former G.C. Foster College athlete Mereica James and Alpha Academy past student Jerrine Foster led the way with wins.

After a second-place finish in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, James took home the 1,500 metres in 4:38.99 for UMES, while Foster, competing at home for North Carolina A&T University, won the discus with a mark of 47.34 metres.

Following her good form at Penn Relays the previous week, where she finished third in the College 100 metres hurdles, St Andrew High old girl Tavia Burke continued to do well. Competing for Bethune Cookman University, she had a second-place finish in her pet event, with a 13.56 seconds clocking. Former Holmwood Technical half miler Celia Whyte, competing for UMES, had two third-place finishes as she clocked 2:10.76 in the 800 metres and 4:41.10 in the 1,500 metres.
