Students, schools and violence

Our students and the schools they attend keep getting more and more violent!

Every so often we hear of violent incidents occurring on school campuses around the island. This should not be so.

Truth be told, nothing is perfect but at the same time reports of students attacking each other or even attacking those in authority have become way too prevalent.

Last week, there were reports of two such violent incidents in two St Catherine schools.

In the first, the dean of discipline at a school in St Catherine was attacked and stabbed by a student who was reportedly barred from classes because his parents failed to show up to discuss his future.

In the second incident, a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was stabbed by a female schoolmate.

These reports do nothing but paint a bad image of our institutions, not to mention the motives of the students who attend them.

It can definitely be argued that more attention needs to be paid to the security measures at educational institutions if the problem is to be curbed.

We often hear talk of such plans but no action, which means the issue will continue to rear its ugly head while we only sit and be sympathetic.

The time to act is now; procrastination is not an option. We are only giving our students the liberty to ruin their own future, while ultimately ruining that of the country.
