Calabar's Ashinia Miller

School: Calabar High School

Events: Shot put and Discus

Class: 2

Main opponent: Jonathan Lynford (St George's College)

After failing to make the final cut of throwers for Calabar last year, a determined Ashinia Miller chose to remain focus and at his first attempt, won both the shot put and discus events at the recently concluded ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletic Championships.

Miller threw a personal-best 17.41 metres to claim gold in the shot-put event and created history by becoming the first Jamaican youth to throw past 17.40 metres, the qualifying mark for the World Youth games.

He was a little short off his personal best in the discus event but his throw of 47.25 metres was enough to secure first place.

A few days later at the Carifta Games in St Lucia, Miller also won gold in both events.

When asked what it took to be a champion in his event, the proud Miller replied "hard work, determination and dedication".

He, however, admits that at times he feels like quitting, but his coach Julian Robinson, whom he looks up to, is always there to offer some much-needed motivation.

Now, Miller trains six days per week for at least five hours as he prepares for the World Youth Games in June and Pan-American games in July.
