Portmore look to humble Boys' Town

PORTMORE UNITED are aiming to take out two birds with one stone tomorrow afternoon when they face Boys' Town in the second-round final of the Digicel Premier League, starting at 5 p.m. at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Boys' Town rebounded from a humiliating 6-2 loss at Waterhouse to beat Portmore 2-1 in league play, two rounds ago, setting themselves up for a spot in the bonus final against the champions, who were early qualifiers.

redeem themselves

Portmore coach Linval Dixon said the champions are out to redeem themselves and clinch their first cup of the season.

"The last time we played they beat us and we want to redeem ourselves. We're preparing to do just that," said Dixon.

"Silverware is silverware and when you play in a final you go there to win. I expect the same kind of sentiments from Boys' Town. It's a final and it will be a tough final," he added.

Boys' Town are hunting their first piece of premiership silverware since their return to top-flight football.

Last Sunday, the Red Brigade rallied from two goals down against Tivoli Gardens to secure the draw needed to seal their spot in tomorrow afternoon's final.

Portmore were held to a goalless draw by overall second-place Harbour View at Compound.

Dixon said although his side faced the possibility of being without three players, goalie Sean Sawyers, wing back Eric Vernon and midfielder Wolry Wolfe, who played in Jamaica's 0-0 friendly draw against Nigeria in England on Wednesday, Portmore would still be ready for the final.

"Sean, Eric and Wolry are away with the Reggae Boyz, but we have our replacements. It depends on when they get back. If they don't get the opportunity to play, the other guys are waiting in the wings," he said.

top strikers

Both teams are missing their top strikers as Boys' Town Denzil Watson has jumped ship to Harbour View and Roen Nelson is off on trials in China.

However, Portmore has a deep bench and Boys' Town will still be a solid unit led by George Vernal and Michael Campbell in attack.

Forward Steven Morrissey and midfielders Mario Swaby and Tremaine Stewart are the Portmore players Boys' Town will have to keep close tabs on.

Portmore United are overall league leaders with 43 points. They redeemed themselves with 24 points in the second round after ending the first round in fourth place with 19 points.

Boys' Town, which ended the first round in fifth place, accumulated 21 second-round points for second behind Portmore. Today's winning team will receive $250,000.00 and the losers $150,000.00.
