Senior cop in court for vehicular manslaughter

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Spanish Town

A Senior police officer who is charged with causing death by dangerous driving will reappear in the Spanish Town RM Court on January 20.

Yvonne Martin-Daley, who was attached to the Police Academy in Twickenham Park, reappeared before Resident Magistrate C. Wiltshire yesterday. Her lawyer, Lancelot Clarke Jr, had the senior police woman's bail extended until that day.

Her appearance arose from a July 15, 2008, accident along the Spanish Town bypass, which resulted in the death of Constable Mark Needham.

Collision

It was revealed that about 7 on the morning in question, the policeman was travelling in an easterly direction when, upon reaching a section of the road, a Suzuki Grand Vitara sport utility vehicle driven by Yvonne Martin-Daley made a U-turn. The lawman's bike was said to have collided with the vehicle. He died on the spot.

An investigation was conducted by the St Catherine North Traffic Department which led to charges being brought against Martin-Daley. She had made previous appearances in court since the incident.
