Romain Virgo making his mark

Roxroy McLean, Star Intern

Romain Virgo debuts on Rebel Salute.

It has been two years since Romain Virgo won Digicel's 'Rising Stars' talent competition.

Now, after all the excitement and awards he has received, the singer will be performing on this year's Rebel Salute concert, which is the first major show for the artiste, who is still in his teens.

Virgo was sensational throughout the 2007 competition and outshone his opponents with singing skills that seemed to stretch beyond the talent of a 17 year old.

"Let me tell you I am so excited right now. I feel so good. The show is like a dream come true, from long time I wanted to perform on Rebel Salute," Virgo told The Star.

Different performance

The show will take place tomorrow at the Port Kaiser Sports Club and Virgo, who is doing a five-year bachelor's degree in performance at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, assured fans that his performance will be different from the ones they saw in the competition.

"I am going to make a mark so that when next year comes I will get another call. I am a person who doesn't allow anyone to figure me out. Even if I should do a song that I did on 'Rising Stars' I always try to add something new to it," said Virgo, who is studying for a major in voice and minor in keyboard at the college.

Musical frenzy

The show, which has been around for 15 years, is set to transform the atmosphere inside the venue into a cultural musical frenzy, one that Virgo describes as the best and welcomes with open arms.

"I see Rebel Salute as one of the shows which artistes, if they get on, must feel good about. It's not just for Jamaicans but for the entire world, so for me to perform is great," he said.

Virgo rose to stardom quite brilliantly, after he charmed and flirted with females throughout the televised talent competition. The young millionaire became an instant hero in his community of Stepney, in St Ann.

The ladder of success

But Virgo, who describes himself as fearless, outspoken and artistic, remains humble as he climbs the ladder of success.

"The sky is the limit for me. Most people would ask where do I see myself in the next five years. I would say to them that I see myself in the Grammy line."

He continued: "What I take from this would never be one thing. 'Rising Stars'is such a good show and it can change you from that wannabe status to a star. I am just grateful now because I can help my family in so many ways," said Virgo.

Musical career

Virgo's musical career has yet to expand to the level he hopes, but the former Aabuthnott Gallimore High student says he understands the need for more hard work.

"After 'Rising Stars' is just pure hard work, so I am taking it one step at a time. Now I have to go out there and let the people know what I have to offer," he said.

Virgo has been working with Donovan Germaine of Penthouse Productions and Dawin Brown of Vikings Records. He told The Star that he appreciates all the support that he has received so far.

"Everybody who we go around really want to see Romain Virgo go far and that is really tremendous," he said.
