Humble Lions still in mourning

Clarendon Super League club Humble Lions continue to reel from the recent murder of its manager, Winston Doharty.

Doharty, who has been associated with the Effortville-based club since its formative years in the mid-1970s, was gunned down shortly after 3:30 p.m. on New Year's eve as he entered his Hazard Drive home in Clarendon. The incident is still being investigated by the Clarendon police.

"It's a terrible loss," Anthony Pringle, coach of the team, told STAR Sports. "He is not only a club man but a community person. We really don't know how we are going manage without him," Pringle said.

"We depend on him for everything."

Doharty played for Humble Lions in his earlier days before taking on the role as the chief financier of its operations. He rented a house for 'out-of-parish' players who are recruited by the club during the regular Super League season.

Humble Lions' woes have been compounded by the fact that they do not currently train at their home field at Effortville, as it is being renovated. They have spent the last month training at Four Paths field.

The period of mourning as well as preparations for Doharty's funeral have affected training. Fortunately for the team, the South Confed has sympathised and has offered to postpone its league games until after Doharty's expected funeral next weekend.

Humble Lions have never qualified for the premier league but have been regular contenders in the Super League. They were edged out by Sporting Central in 2007 and by Rivoli, last year.
