Jamaica's junior Reggae Boyz will today try to go a step closer in their quest to qualify for the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, when they play hosts St Vincent and the Grenadines in their final game of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) play-offs in Kingstown, tonight at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. Jamaica time).
The young Boyz, who are trying to emulate the performances of their 2001 counterparts who made it to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina, are second in the group on four points and must beat the hosts and group leaders to guarantee themselves automatic qualification to the eight-nation CONCACAF play-offs that will ultimately decide the four qualifiers for the World Cup.
Hat-trick
Jamaica drew 1-1 with Haiti in their opening encounter and on Sunday, drubbed the Dominican Republic 4-1, courtesy of a hat-trick from Sporting Central forward Alanzo Adlam, to be on four points.
They trail St Vincent and the Grenadines who have the maximum six from two games after beating the Dominican Republic 2-0 in their opening game Friday, before getting a surprise 2-1 result over Haiti when the teams met on Sunday night.
Haiti are third with one point while the Dominican Republic are yet to get off the mark, having lost both encounters.
Whereas the winners of the group will qualify automatically for the CONCACAF play-offs, the runners-up will have to enter into a play-off series with Central American contenders, Honduras, who finished fourth in their regional qualifiers.
Two yellow cards
The Boyz, coached by Donovan Duckie and Lenworth Hyde Sr, are expected to start the game with the same side that clobbered the Dominican Republic, with the exception of star striker Dever Orgill, who received two yellow cards in the last match on Sunday and was ejected.
Orgill, who has scored heavily in the qualifiers, could be replaced by either Kemal Malcolm or Shamar Shelton and following Sunday's game, Duckie said he did not foresee any drop in performance owing to Orgill's absence.
"We have four capable strikers left in the team and I am sure they will be able to step up and do as well," said Duckie.
The USA, Mexico, Canada, El Salvador, Costa Rica and hosts Trinidad and Tobago have already qualified for the CONCACAF play-offs, which will be staged in Trinidad and Tobago in March.
"Four teams will qualify from the CONCACAF play-offs for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which will be held in Egypt from September 25-October 16 this year.
