Tough challenges for DPL top two

LEADERS Portmore United and second-place Harbour View face tough away matches in Digicel Premier League action tomorrow afternoon, tackling homeground kings St Georges and resurgent Arnett Gardens, respectively.

Portmore surged to the top of the premiership on Sunday with a narrow 1-0 win at Brancourt, whereas Harbour View stumbled to a 1-0 loss at home against Boys' Town.

It won't get any easier for the leaders, Portmore on 37 and Harbour View locked on 34 with Tivoli Gardens.

Both teams were beaten at home by their rivals in the first round - Portmore cut down 2-1 at Ferdie Neita Park by St Georges and Harbour View lost 1-0 to Arnett at Compound.

With in-form Tivoli Gardens within striking distance and down to face eighth-place Rivoli at the Prison Oval, the lead could very well change hands for the second time in three days.

ON THE upswing

In addition, fourth-place Boys' Town on 33 points are also on the road but face promoted ninth-place team Meadhaven and are firm favourites for a third straight win.

Similar to Tivoli, Boys' Town are close enough to go past Harbour View should the former leaders falter at Arnett.

The Stars of the East have not won in three games but Brazilian coach Waldemere de Oliveira said there was no reason to press the panic button.

"We lost because Boys' Town played a good game and we made some mistakes in defence. Sometimes, these things happen," he said.

"We have lost one game and continue to be in second position, so there's no need to panic. We just have to continue and work hard," he added.

Arnett Gardens, Harbour View's perennial nemeses, are on the upswing, winning back-to-back matches, scoring twice in each, a significant improvement on what had become a signature one goal per game.

Transfer window

Their second-round recovery has taken them to seventh in the standings on 21 points, two off Waterhouse running on the spot in sixth place.

Five new players brought in during January's transfer window have seemingly inspired the Junglists, Leon Strickland and Kevin King handing them a 2-1 win over Reno on Sunday.

Expect a full house at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex for this big match-up in which Harbour View will have to play their socks off to come away with a win.

Portmore shouldn't get too cozy at Lynch Park where no team has beaten St Georges this season.

Coach Geoffrey Maxwell would not have been amused after his team's 1-0 loss to Meadhaven and will be burning to cut down the leaders and defending champions for the second time this season.

St Georges respect no team travelling to Portland and Portmore will have to beware that their lead is not a short-lived one as marksman Daniel Shaw and company will be brimming with confidence.

Portmore's arsenal will include Roen Nelson, who failed to score for the first time in five games and could be impossible to keep off the scoresheet against St Georges.

Tivoli travel to the Spanish Town Prison Oval without top striker Roland Dean, red-carded after scoring the winner at Waterhouse on Sunday. However, Navion Boyd is in scintillating form and is bound to cause bundles of problems for a physical Rivoli defence, which will either be outsped or forced to give up a penalty or free kicks around the box.

In other games, inconsistent Waterhouse against Reno could go either way at Frome and Village get the nod over Sporting Central at the Elliston-Wakeland Centre in the battle of cellar-dwellers.
