Cops question woman for two weeks

A woman suspected of being involved in a series of robberies within the St Andrew Central Police Division is to be charged or released by October 3, this after her attorney, Peter Champagnie, filed an habeas corpus application in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The woman, Halcion Rhone, has been in the police custody for the last two weeks after the lawmen accosted her under the suspicion that she was involved in a spate of robberies in central St Andrew.

Police say they are questioning the woman in relation to some 10 robberies that occurred in the division. The robberies, in which $80,000 and more was taken, occurred after the victims had made large withdrawals at financial institutions.

Charge or release

The lawmen say they suspect Rhone plays the part of a 'spotter' in the robberies. A 'spotter' presumably poses as a customer in financial institutions, taking note of clients making substantial withdrawals inside before alerting criminal counterparts outside. The counterparts, police say, then rob the unsuspecting persons.

Champagnie requested that his client be charged or released as she was in custody on mere suspicion and not evidence. However, police say Rhone has not been cooperating and as such they needed more time to conduct further question and answer sessions with her.

Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown ordered that she be charged or released on or by October 3.
