SHould I tell my boyfriend I am infected

Dear Counsellor:

I found out that I was HIV infected two weeks ago. Do you think my boyfriend is also infected? I'm afraid to tell him. As a matter of fact, my mother told me not to say a word to him because he must be infected also and when he finds out it would be time enough. What should I do?

Worried

Dear Worried:

Your test does not always tell your partners status. The only way to know if your boyfriend is infected is for him to get tested also. Is your boyfriend the only sex partner you ever had? My suggestion is that you speak with an HIV-knowledgeable counsellor, as soon as possible. You must use a condom, every time you have sex, to prevent your boyfriend from becoming infected if he is not yet infected or to prevent re-infection if both of you are already infected.

More sex partners greater risk

Dear Counsellor:

My friend and I are trying to see which one of us would have sex with more women by the end of the year. Can I get HIV from sex with many women? We don't have sex with men.

John

Dear John:

If you choose to have sex with several partners, you increase the risk of becoming infected with each partner you have. However, it is not just a question of how many partners you have. Any one act of unprotected intercourse (sex without a condom) with a person, who is infected with HIV, could result in you becoming infected. It may be that these women are also taking sexual risks with other people. You should reduce your risk of HIV infection by using a condom every time you have sex. You must use the condom from the beginning of the sexual act to the end. Remember, the more sex partners you have, the greater your chances are of becoming infected with HIV. Please share this information with your friend.
