New Kidz wants to rule the block

Krista Henry, Staff Reporter

Dancehall artiste New Kidz. - Contributed

New Kidz is the latest young star on Gargamel Music's block. Born Anthony Bennett, in Kingston, Kidz never shies away from talking about his upbringing, his joys and struggles, and having to learn to transform life's obstacles into his own musical theatre.

New Kidz's love for music started when he was a youngster, listening to his father's records and playing music.

"I went from hearing the music to playing the music, and now things have transformed once again to New Kidz actually performing the music," he said.

Mentor

New Kidz's life changed in 2003, when he started to hang around the studio of dancehall legend Buju Banton, who noticed the youth's talent and took him under his wing.

Under the guidance of the 'Gargamel', New Kidz has enhanced his stage presence, lyrical quality, time management and overall understanding of the music industry, yet manages to maintain his own unique style. He commented: "Even though I'm around Buju, I still have to be myself; I have to be New Kidz. I'm not going to sit and wait for Buju to tell me to do a song, how to do the song and how to write it. To make a difference, you must stay focused on the music and work hard."

For the artiste, music is his ultimate inspiration, and being an entertainer is its own reward.

"The best part of being an entertainer is performing for the people; being on a stage where I can look in front and see people enjoying my music," he told THE STAR.

Official single

So far, New Kidz has made strides in the business with songs such as Problem and Walk Out, the socially conscious Carnal Abuse and Right To Fight, featuring label mate Mitch, and Woman, which is the first official single from his yet-to-be released debut album.

Keeping on top of the game has been the artiste's biggest challenge, especially with so many other deejays trying to make it big. Thus far, in trying to keep to his goal, New Kidz has worked with producers mainly from Gargamel Music, but also John John and Truck Back Records.

For the future, New Kidz says: "I see New Kidz collecting a Grammy, performing on the Super Bowl stage, taking myself to the next level, taking Gargamel to the next level. I see myself as 'the Boss'.... You can expect my album sometime early next year, new year, New Kidz, new album ... Kidz World."

With a philosophy to be honest, focused and to trust in God, New Kidz will hopefully one day see his dreams come true.
