Drug pusher given suspended sentence

Orandy Brown was arguably handed a most favourable sentence in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, when the 19-year-old was given a nine-month suspended sentence. He was before the court on charges of possession of and dealing in cocaine.

The court was told that the police were carrying out operations in sections of the Corporate Area when the teen was searched and 33 packets of crack/cocaine and $5,000 found on his person.

He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the find before being brought to face Resident Magistrate Glen Brown on Monday.

During the hearing of the case, RM Brown expounded his dislike for drug pushers and drug retailers after the accused teen's lawyer only stopped short of begging that his client be given a second chance, as opposed to being imprisoned.

"Retailers of drugs don't care about their fellow men, as long as they can 'eat a food'," RM Brown said. "When you hustle cocaine it means that you don't care about what happens to that person, so why should I care about what happens to him?" I have no sympathy whatsoever."

RM Brown continued that it was incredibly difficult to give a drug runner a second chance because they are the ones who make it difficult for drug-addicts to make good of second chances that may have been offered to them.

The accused man's lawyer however, was relentless in his plea, referring to a community report by the probation office which highlighted that his client has had no previous conviction and has never been a nuisance in his community. After his numerous pleas which must have lasted the better part of 15 minutes, RM Brown handed down his ruling.

You could have heard a pin drop as the RM leaned forward to address the accused man, who was lucky enough to be given a nine month suspended sentence for the offence.
