A section of Kew Road, St Andrew. - Norman Grindley
AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. We will then have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.
Before we start today, we must pay homage to our athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Indeed, they have made us proud, and the communities of Waterhouse and Trelawny are ecstatic. Who would have thought that gold medals would equal new roads?
But after the euphoria, Kew Road remains. It has been nearly six months since we started looking at the pothole-infested avenue. This was so long ago, that we took some time off from this issue to focus on an open manhole, a house without a retaining wall, and broken traffic lights. Two of the above have been repaired, while Kew Road, off Maxfield Avenue, continues to deteriorate into a stretch of holes and rubble.
With no medallists hailing from this road, there seems to be no hope of repair, at least for now. The latest from the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation is that they are aware of the state of the road, but the lack of funds continue to be a hindrance. "The council is at present strapped for resources, [but] Kew Road will be getting our attention," the acting city engineer said yesterday. He explained that while some roads nearby were recently rehabilitated and patched, there are no funds to repair Kew Road.
