The godly sounds of J Cee

Dwight Nelson, Star Writer

Gospel artiste J Cee. - Contributed

Although she has only been in the music business for less than two years, Jermet Campbell (J Cee) is now making headway in the gospel music arena.

The 26-year-old gospel artiste was introduced to the Jamaican public and the world at large in October 2006, when Bishop Dr Joseph AdeGold gave her the apostolic covering and blessing to minister to the nation.

Since then, she has been actively performing in Jamaica and the Caribbean at major shows with DJ Nicholas.

Gospel in dancehall

J Cee has also shared the stage with several other top gospel artistes, such as Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Canton Jones and Dr Bobby Jones. J Cee is of the feeling that the Word of God should be taken to even the dancehall arena, as she was also the opening and only gospel act at the recently held Beenie Man Sizzle in Clarendon.

J Cee is also a solid achiever, as she was selected among the world's elite as one of the best top-20 singers in the BBC world contest in 2007 with her hit song Nah Fi Run.

For the same song, she copped the award of Big Tune in 2007 from Roots FM and was awarded best female vocalist for 2007 at the Mega Jam 98FM Gospel awards.

She also represented Youth For Christ for Jamaica in Arizona, USA, in February 2008.

Multi-talented

J Cee is an active person outside of her singing career, as she is a praise and worship leader, dance instructor, dance choreographer and project planner, designer and a multidimensional singer.

J Cee describes herself as a strong, energetic and warm individual who grew up on sound Christian principles. J Cee told THE STAR, "I started singing in church at the age of three, where I was on the children's choir, youth choir and other singing groups until I finally emerged as a soloist."

She added, "I was infused with the purpose of the ministry through my grandfather's guidance and teachings, and thus, I selected dancing and singing as the medium to administer the gospel."

J Cee, who started her Christian walk over 13 years ago, describes her most memorable moment when she performed at her artiste launch party during which she demonstrated her vocal versatility as she thrilled the audience with Jehovah 4 Real and Holy Ghost Church with DJ Nicholas, which had the audience asking for more.

J Cee, who is married to her manager, Mark Campbell, is the proud mother of Joshua-Mark, and is described by many as the gospel diva because of her classy stage appearance and her multi-dimensional ability of doing jazz, R&B, dancehall, reggae among other elements of the music.

With her three songs, Nah Fi Run, For You and No, and her brand-new pre-release titled Weeping, J Cee is now working on her album, which should be released early next year.
