Judith Mulgrave - full of life

Judith Urseline Mulgrave is grateful to have reached the age of 100 and on July 2, she celebrated this milestone with the members of her church.

Mulgrave celebrated her birthday at a party held at the Gregory Park Baptist Church. Church members and friends and family talked about how wonderful she was. "She is very quiet and unassuming and extremely 'manners-able' and all her faculties are in tact," one church member said.

Mulgrave was born on July 2, 1908, to parents Williams and Sarah Mulgrave in Mahogany Hill, St Elizabeth.

She is the third of five children and spent her early years in St Elizabeth, and then went to live at St John's Road, Spanish Town, St Catherine.

She attended Friendship Primary School, Spanish Town. Mulgrave later moved to Port Henderson, then to Naggo Head and in 1953 moved to Melvin Avenue, Gregory Park, St Catherine, where she currently lives and is a member of the Gregory Park Baptist Church.

Quarry worker

Mulgrave worked as a labourer on Caymanas Estates and at a quarry in order to provide for her children. She also worked as a seamstress, making mostly children's dresses.

She had five children, three of whom died at an early age leaving, behind two girls. One of the two girls died a year ago, while the other resides in England.

Mulgrave has 16 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Her favourite dishes are curried mutton, fish and eggs. She not only likes to eat, but she also loves to prepare the dishes, including potato pudding.

Her love for the Lord led her to be baptised on Good Friday in 1964, at the Phillippo Baptist Church, by Reverend Joslyn Carter-Henry.

She has remained in good health for most of her life, however, on November 20, 1981, she met in an accident and broke her hip. In 2005, she was hospitalised and her right leg was amputated.

This did not deter her and she rose above all the obstacles and is a dedicated member of her church and attends every Sunday despite being confined to a wheelchair.

Even though centenarian Judith Urseline Mulgrave has only one leg, she still attends church regularly. Here she listens while being congratulated during her 100th birthday celebration at the Gregory Park Baptist Church in Portmore, St Catherine on Wednesday, July 2. - Anthony Minott
