Secret Mel

September 11 jogs memories of the coordinated suicide attack, where terrorists hijacked and intentionally crashed two commercial airlines into the World Trade Centre.

Donovan Ellis, Moiyan Williams, Kevon Bennett and Courtney Lawrence, better known as Secret Melodies, recall September 11 as the day their group formed in 2006, when they all were in grade 10.

The youngsters, who are recent graduates of Browns Town High School, is a diminished four from 16 original members. Courtney explains, "We were the more committed ones and were always at practice."

"The principal of the school was instrumental in exposing our talent, as he organised for us to sing at hotels, along with the school band," Moiyan said.

Moiyan said he was always interested in music and upon his transfer from Spanish Town High School, in the summer, when he visited the school for orientation, he made enquires about music activities at the school and was told it was good.

Donovan, the member with the higher pitched voice, said they started singing in church and in class, as well as writing. "It is funny how we all met together and how we all had similar stories. I was in class humming and when I stopped, Moiyan would continue. I spoke to him one day in class and that was how we met, then we met with Courtney and Kevon who sang during break," he recalls.

"In 2007, we entered 'Digicel Rising Stars' and made it to the top 10 in the Ocho Rios audition round," Kevon, the stoutest of the four, said. He continued, "We dropped out, but after examining and learning from our experience, we are back, determined to win."

Kevon was quick to highlight, "The key in 'Digicel Rising Stars' for us is that we understand what positive comments, or what negative comments, do for the group." As he got the 'yes' of the other members, he continued, "It is to build us and help keep us."

The group SLR has created waves since they were placed in the top 10 of the 2008 'Digicel Rising Stars'.

The Star: Who do you think is your major competition?

Annashare Blake: Honestly, it is everyone because there are so many talent this year, you can't count out anyone.

The Star: What do you think of the talent on the show?

Latoya Coleman: I think the stars are dynamic. What Jamaicans hearing on the shows are natural voices, and they are already stars.

The Star: Who is the first person you called when you found out that you are in the top 10?

Roshauna Dennis: Well, I didn't call anyone because everyone were watching. But, they called to congratulate the team.

The Star: Who is your favourite 'Rising Star' winner of all time?

Annashare Blake: Chris (Martin), because he has left 'Rising Star' and created his own star profile.

The Star: Which 'Rising Star' past contestant would you not want to compete against?

Roshauna Dennis: Wow, Susan Perkins ... she was one of the weaker contestants, and our group only strives from strong contest. A true star only shines when it gets though.

The Star: What do you like most about the competition?

Annashare Blake: The challenges, because it helps me to move at a faster pace in everything I do.

The Star: How has the show impacted on your life?

Latoya Colman: It has a strong impact so far, I see myself being more punctual, more polite. I've learned the values of preparation and that comes with everything.

The Star: Which entertainer, local or international, you would like to work with?

Roshuana Dennis: Celine Dion; she's really strong and, she has values that I desire.

The Star: Do you think there will be a female 'Rising Star' this year?

SLR: Yes, we think that the competition has a lot of strong female competitors.
