Anna Watkin - Contributed
After searching for her birth father and eventually learning that he had died, Anna Watkin finally has something to celebrate.
Watkin, who lives in Canada, was adopted when she was just three months old. She later found out that her father was of Jamaican heritage. Her story first appeared in THE STAR in February when she made a public appeal for anyone with information about her father to come forward. She also offered a reward of CDN$2,000 (J$123,380).
Two days after the story was published however, she received the devastating news that her father, Calvin Hibbert had died of a heart attack in 1990. She, however, managed to locate his relatives in Jamaica and, a few months ago, travelled to the island to meet them.
Very first time
She told THE STAR, "My husband Jason and I came down for the weekend to meet my birth family for the very first time. I cannot really begin to put into words how amazing everyone was. I was greeted with a huge fruit basket full of all the delicious fruit that grows there, and many smiling faces. The evening that we arrived I was greeted by my cousin Donovan and his wife Jacinta who organised our weekend and made it possible to meet as many family members as we could over the weekend."
Watkin also told THE STAR that she travelled to Kingston to meet her brother and his wife and added, "I feel so blessed, so incredibly lucky and loved by my family that I have just united with. I feel as though I was born under a lucky star as my adopted Mom said to me when I was younger. I may have had a hole in my heart but deep down inside I knew that there was so much love waiting to be given and received."
She added, "I want to thank everyone who helped make this possible. I thank THE STAR for being the vehicle for people to read my plea and come forth to help make my wish come true."
