It was dancehall at its notorious best when some of the top DJ divas in the trade strutted their stuff at Club Nazz in Falmouth on Friday.
When the dust settled it was Lady Saw who got the gold medal by a metre. Slated to close the show, the veteran DJ was chilling when Spice threw down the gauntlet announcing, "I am the best in the business."
This riled Lady Saw who immediately went on stage took, the mike from Spice in a friendly banter and went on to decimate the pack. She was at her 'rawest' with explicit discourse on what she claims she does best and the audience was with her throughout.
Our political leaders were not spared as she tore into the skyrocketing price of petrol and the Noise Abatement Act, which stipulates a midnight or 2 o'clock shutting down of entertainment events.
Sasha and Spice attempted to match the gold medallist with some of the smut or delicacy (depending on which side of the fence you sit and apparently a good 99% of the audience was on the latter side based on the response the acts got), but could not match up to Saw. They however lived-up to the dancehall requirement and had the crowd with them.
Using crowd response as the benchmark, D'Angel may not have taken the show but were the decision to be taken by a panel of judges she clearly could have got the nod.
Entering with some dancers and a clear plan she was most entertaining. While she too ventured into the theme of the divas, her comments were more palatable.
On the flipside the DJ who goes by the name Diva must be reminded that although Jamaicans love raunchiness there is a difference between expletives and such. She therefore should be told that Jamaicans can hear bad words for free and therefore this should not be dished out as paid for entertainment.
