Judge bars murder accused's bail

Dwayne Mcleod, Staff Reporter

The three men charged with the murder of couple Jhanel Whyte and Tyawo McKenzie last month were further remanded when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

RM Glen Brown was told by the clerk of the court that the case file was still not complete. The court was told that the post mortem report among other things were still incomplete.

As a result, all three men - Andre Ennis, Shane Brown and George Cooper had their bail applications denied.

"At this point all I'm trying to do is get the file ready. Until then, I won't be hearing any bail applications," Brown replied to the clerk.

Defence attorneys for the three men argued that the delay in completing the file is putting their clients at a disadvantage.

Ennis is represented by attorney-at-law Oswald James, while Cooper is represented by Michael Lorne and Brown is represented by Tom Tavares-Finson.

Allegations are that during the week of November 4, Whyte and McKenzie, who were travelling together, were in a motor vehicle accident with Ennis and Cooper, who were travelling along Border Avenue on a motorcycle. The couple took the injured men to the University Hospital where they were treated and released.

Throats slashed

The following day, it is alleged, arrangements were made for the couple to take medication and crutches to the injured men at an apartment in Havendale.

Days after, their bodies were found on November 9 with their throats slashed in the bushes of Mount Salus, Red Hills.

Allegations also are that the men demanded a ransom for the couple's release but were not paid. McKenzie, reportedly had made a call to a family member asking for a loan.

The court was further told that money was withdrawn from Whyte's savings account during the days the couple went missing. It was also told to the court that there are photos of men who are believed to be the accused, making withdrawals from the account of the deceased at an ATM machine in Kingston.

The men will remain in custody until January 11, when the case will be heard again.
