Christmas is A time for giving and a 10-year-old child proved that one cannot be too young to start giving and sharing with others.
A story in Monday's Gleaner reported that a 10-year-old girl, whose mother usually spends money on an annual Christmas concert for her and her friends, decided to use that money to treat students of the Denham Town Primary and Basic schools.
Vanina Morrison, the child who initiated the treat, said in the article that she just wanted to make children happy and make them smile.
That's admirable and demonstrates that adults can be equally kind if children can do the same.
Kindness, however, does not have to be demonstrated only in Christmas, but should be something done year-round and can involve the simplest of tasks.
Some Jamaicans seem to believe that only spending money on an individual constitutes kindness. But there is much more that can be done, like having manners, giving an encouraging word or doing a simple deed.
What this child has demonstrated is that there are still kind people in Jamaica, despite the crime and hopelessness developing among the citizens.
Therefore, it is clear that many of us need to take a page out of this little girl's book and do at least one act of kindness for someone today. As the story demonstrates, we are never too young to do a kind deed for someone in need.
