Accused rustlers to face trial

Analee Bernard, Star Writer

Black River

A trial date of June 27, 2007, has been set in the Black River RM Court for four persons accused of stealing cows.

The four are Phillip Stevens of Norwood Gardens, St. James, Marvelyn Walters of Little River, also in St. James, Dwight Palmer of Belmont in West-moreland and Kevin Bailey of Crawford District, St. Elizabeth.

They appeared in court recently before Resident Mag-istrate Stanley Clarke and Stevens and Walters had their bails extended, while Palmer and Bailey were remanded.

Allegations are that on Friday, September 15 last year about 3:30 a.m., a police party led by Superintendent Maurice Robinson, went to Crawford District in the parish, where they spotted four people in a white Toyota Hiace minibus. The vehicle was intercepted and the carcasses of two bulls and two cows were found inside.

They were escorted to the Black River Police Station where they were arrested and charged with larceny of cattle and receiving stolen property.

Money amounting to $69,700 was also taken from Mr. Stevens along with cellphones from all the accused persons. Mr. Stevens is represented by attorney-at-law Jeremy Palmer.
