Lights, action 'Avante Garde'

by Alicia Roache, Entertainment Co-ordinator

"Lights, Action, Avante Garde!" Saint CEO Deiwight Peters shouted from the microphone at the FashionFace of the Caribbean and Avant Garde designer of the year award at Devon house on Sunday.

But it was more than Avant Garde designs that were on show. There was also a 'spectacle', as Deiwight would later call it, that began on the side of the stage and ended on the runway.

Beenie Man and his wife D'Angel arrived at the show, shortly before its start at 8:45 p.m. to very little fanfare. They were accompanied to their seats by an usher, but outside of the bright red outfits that both wore, she a mini dress, he a jacket with matching jeans pants, there was not much that signalled their presence. Until, the cameras started flashing.

Lights, cameras and plenty of parading would become the order of the night as the two caught the lens of TV and photojournalists' cameras during the intermission.

There were other celebrities there, Voicemail stayed for the entire show, but remained at the rear of the audience, standing where they could see the stage. They also took their 15 minutes in the spotlight during intermission.

All the parading ruffled the feathers of a few fashionistas who frowned upon the idea of waiting for more than the scheduled 15 minutes allotted for intermission, while the sideshow continued.

Later however, the point of the self proclaimed 'King of the Dancehall' and his 'Queen' being such a prominent feature of the show became clear.

Both closed the show and ended the collection of newcomer Martin Miller for White Skyy, with a walk down the runway to tumultuous cheers from those who had stayed until the end.

Miller's 'gangsta pimp' themed collection brought cheers from the audience with the progression from one outfit to the next. The unofficial "first couple of dancehall", according to Peters, walked the runway to the biggest cheers for the night.
