Cricket fever seems to be finally gripping the people of the Caribbean as with less than a month to go to the opening ceremony for ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 on March 11 at the new multi-purpose stadium in Trelawny, preparations have reached fever pitch.
Cable & Wireless, sponsors of West Indies cricket for close to 20 years, and an official sponsor of this year's renewal of international cricket's single biggest event, is gearing itself to take its Cricket World Cup show to the people with an array of activities designed to get wide public involvement at varying levels.
"We have come up with a number of activities designed to get people involved and benefiting from the staging of the event in one way or other," says Towa Beer, head of sponsorship and special events at Cable & Wireless Jamaica.
The company will be the main sponsor of the Mello Zone - a designated area outside the main entrance to Sabina Park where fans will be able to purchase services, top-up prepaid accounts and get a chance to win great prizes. There will also be giveaways and a variety of fun activities.
Cable & Wireless will also be a major sponsor of the official cricket villages which will give patrons an opportunity to experience Jamaican cuisine, entertainment and other aspects of our culture. The cricket villages will be open throughout the tournament at the Cable & Wireless Golf Academy in New Kingston and at Pier 1 in Montego Bay, St. James.
C&WJ is also one of the main sponsors of Brand Trelawny, a two-day festival which will precede the official opening ceremony on March 11. Brand Trelawny will showcase the best of the parish's food, culture, industries and other interesting features in Water Square on March 10 and 11. C&W will enhance the festival's offerings with sales, free trials of an extensive range of its services and tournament memorabilia. The festival will culminate with a live stage show on March 11.
'C&WJ is very pleased with the support and facilitation it has received from the ICC and their representatives as well as with the Local Organising, Committee and our fellow sponsors Beer added.
