Portmore, Harbour View draw 1-1 in women's first leg final

After watching his team playing to a 1-1 draw with Portmore Strikers in the first leg final of the Sherwin Williams Women's League, Harbour View's coach Vin Blaine described his opponents as players who "will die for their team".

While making it clear that he anticipated a tough second leg, Blaine said: "Every time we play Portmore, no matter how weak they are, they are a spirited team, so they are going to come out and run at you, they will die for their team. So we have to get that same spirit, instead of walking on the field."

The teams played out a stalemate at the Constant Spring football field yesterday, and this year's champion will be decided at Barbican on Saturday in the return leg.

Tenisha Vassell, who scored from 20 yards, had given Harbour View the lead in the sixth minute, but later watched her 'keeper, Paula Jackson, give up an easy goal.

Rochelle Bryan pulled Portmore level when she beat Jackson from 35 yards with a lob shot in the 50th minute.

In both halves, Harbour View looked the better team and came close to scoring on a few occasions, but poor shooting let them down.

Portmore Striker's problem appeared to be indiscipline. Coach Cornell Clarke tried to play it down, though it was clear during the first half. Players were arguing with each other and even at the break, top striker, Venicia Reid, was not part of her team's half-time talk.

"It wasn't really a matter of indiscipline, players were just quarrelling with themselves because they were not playing well and that always happen in football," Clarke said.

As for Reid's substitution, Clarke said: "She was showing some descent and we don't stand for that, hence her ejection from the game.

"But Portmore Strikers have things under control, so come Saturday, we are expected to put up a better showing," he added.

The result, Blaine said was "very, very disappointing".

"We should have put away this team in the first half by three goals," he said.
