Recording artiste Mr. Vegas has a new title this Christmas. Vegas played Santa recently by donating to the South Camp Adult Correctional Centre.
He contributed football jerseys to the teams of the One Love Football competition at that institution.
The competition, which takes place at the correctional centre among the prisoners, with a few guards on each team, is aimed at relieving the stress of both the inmates and the guards.
The prison's sports council implemented the programme in 2001 as a means of presenting positive influences.
A member of the sports council told the Star that dancehall artiste Mr. Vegas had sponsored the majority of items this year for the competition.
Last Thursday, Vegas' representative Boswell Lammie a.k.a 'Stampede', presented the jerseys to the various team leaders for Vegas who was unable to attend.
Superindentant E. Allen who oversees the facility was also present, giving her vote of thanks for Vegas's contribution.
When Vegas was contacted days later, he claims to always try to unite the brothers, by trying different things and different causes.
He said: "nuff a dem man in a prison, we haffi get dem united inside di prison, join as one. When dem come road, is the same unity instead of tension.
" A big tings dem do, but they're still human beings. We haffi stop di violence from more than one angle. Me sponsor four or five of the six teams. When they approached me I was excited."
Vegas said that it was important for him to make sure the prisoners got the right treatment. He claims to visit them frequently and says they are always happy to see him. "They are not the animals people think they are. God forgives us, so we must forgive as well," he said.
