Having a shag at Church Heathen

Shaggy goes to the confessional during the shoot for the video Church Heathen. - colin hamilton

Today THE STAR continues one of its latest features, a weekly review of new songs. Three musical minds with different tastes will analyse each song and will grade it on vocal ability, lyrics, musical arrangement and appeal. Songs that make the grade will be given our stamp of approval, "Mus Buss". For those songs that fail, well they will be dumped under the "Caan Buss" heading.

The three reviewers welcome feedback from the artistes and the public about the column. Send your comments to bussdem@hotmail.com, or if you are an artiste wishing your song to be reviewed, send the CD to:

Mus' Buss/Caan Buss,

c/o THE STAR,

7 North Street,

Kingston.

This week, Mus Buss, Caan Buss takes a look at Shaggy's Church Heathen which speaks about hypocrisy in the church through the eyes of a church sister.

Queen: Mi neva expec da type a tune yah from Shaggy and I've never heard a more accurate song.

TAE: Yow, da tune yah hard, it sell off. I love the concept of the song, where Shaggy is basically acknowledging the fact that him neva normally into the whole church ting, but now him taste it an si seh "not even soap opera cyaan sweet suh."

Guest: Before yuh even reach inna di song, di chorus alone get yuh attention an mek yuh realise seh dis is not an ordinary song.

Queen: Truss mi, mi agree, di song is definitely well written and put together an mi sure everybody can relate. Plus di sound effects definitely carry off the feel of the song and the lyrics.

TAE: Yea mi like all di duppy-sounding, opera-choir part for the chorus. It gives a churchy feeling, while dejaying it in the Jamaican creole.

Guest: A long time people a talk bout di hypocrisy inna di church but mi neva hear a song weh capture it so well. Him talk bout di tings weh gwaan a church without being too blasphemous.

TAE: Yow a true star. Di song presents a serious, topical issue in a humourous way.

Queen: While the song talks about alot of truths in the society, I think those who are guilty might be spurred to do something about their hypocrisy once they hear it and as I said earlier, I never expected this type of tune from Shaggy, but I think he did well.

Guest: Duhhhhhh di song Mus Buuuus.

TAE: Yow, da one yah is another controversy like It Wasn't Me. jus' hope people get the real message. Dah tune yah haffi get di Mus Buss signal roun ere.

Queen: What can I say, controversy on a good rhythm sells, suh definitely it Mus Buss.
