Sasha-Kaye Brown - an unforgettable death

Sasha-Kaye Brown

As part of the hunt for child killers, today THE STAR continues its series geared towards informing the public about the unsolved murders.

A reward totalling $100,000 is being offered for the arrest and charge of person or persons responsible for the death of Sasha-Kaye Brown. Call Crime Stop toll free at 311. Full confidentiality will be maintained.

For many residents of Barnes Avenue in St. Andrew, Sasha-Kaye Brown's death will long be remembered. For them, it is her screams that have made her death unforgettable.

Ten-year-old Sasha-Kaye, her grandparents, Gerald and Dorcas Brown, and her aunt Michelle, were trapped inside their house, after heavily-armed gunmen fire-bombed the premisis about 3:00 a.m. Residents who attempted to help as the little girl screamed for help were fired on by gunmen. They add that their pleas with soldiers who were camped nearby to help fell on deaf ears.

"It hard fi we figet di death cause di likkle girl did really a cry out fi help," said a resident of the Maxfield Avenue community.

"Wha mek matters worse, di soldier dem hear di shot dem an' not even did come out," the resident added.

Some said they saw Sasha-Kaye on the verandah screaming for help as the fire razed the house where she lived with her family. They said they are still unsure as to why the house was attacked.

"Bwoy we nuh know why dem would a do someting like dat because is a family wha neva in a nutten," said another resident of the community.

"The lady (Dorcas Brown) used to sell newspaper 'bout di place. A nuh somebody weh gi no trouble so a wicked di bwoy dem wha dweet wicked."

Since the death of Sasha-Kaye and her family, the house has remained in the condition in which the fire left it. When THE STAR visited Barnes Avenue, only the concrete wall remained and the street was deserted.

"A so di place stay normally when yuh come 'bout because everybody stay in," said a male resident of the community.

"It always stay so a nuh really di killing wha gwaan. People jus stay in a dem place an' who fi go work go work but everytime wi see di house wi jus feel a way 'bout how di people dem dead star," said a male resident of Barnes Avenue.
