TIVOLI GARDENS WILL have two teams in the semi-finals of the Berger Paints Super Netball League after their B unit pulled off a stunning 48-46 overtime victory over perennial quarter-finalists Windalco at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
While Tivoli B were advancing to the semi-finals for the first time, their senior partners, the 'A' team, were making light work of Alpha 'A' in an easy 43-30 finish.
Waulgrovians A have also made their way to the semi-finals after thrashing Police 'A' 73-29, while defending champions Jamalco wasted no time in securing their berth with the 82-27 demolition of a short-staffed Arnett Gardens team.
While the other games went according to script, the Tivoli 'B'/Windalco meeting was nothing short of spectacular.
At the end of the first quarter, Windalco had a 9-7 lead and were expected to maintain that, however, Tivoli's goal attack Nerissa Gibbs had other ideas.
Knocking down 33 goals from 38 attempts, she provided the kind of spark that her team needed to get back into the game.
The second quarter saw a big swing with Tivoli leading 22-16 and looking comfortable. At the end of the third, things looked the same at 31-24 and everybody was resigned to the impending upset.
However, Windalco had more fight in them and a brilliant fourth quarter, in which their coach Winston Nevers finally found the right combination after employing the services of three different goal shooters for the game.
The fight seemed to have been knocked out of Tivoli as the final whistle blew at 40-all.
However, overtime was a different matter as both teams struggled to get rid of nerves. In the end, it was Tivoli who managed to get their attack going in the almost electric atmosphere at the Leila Robinson Courts.
At that point, Tivoli's goal shooter Patricia Chambers came to the show and took some of the responsibility from Gibbs to end with 15 goals from 21 attempts.
For the eventual losers, Diana Millwood had 14 goals from 23 attempts, while Stacy-Ann Brown moved from wing attack to goal shoot to sink 12 from 13. Tracy-Ann Robinson was also influential, moving from goal defence to goal shoot to grab three goals from her four attempts. At goal attack, Viola Francis had 17 from 26.
In Tuesday's semi-finals Tivoli 'A' will oppose their 'B' team and Waulgrovians 'A' face Jamalco at 5:45 p.m.
