THE TROUBLED EAST Kingston community of Rockfort has once again been re-ignited by violence, as three men were shot dead, one by police, in two separate incidents yesterday.
The first of the two incidents occured at about 1:16 a.m., when residents of Doech Road say three men, all armed with handguns, came from 'Bottom Scheme' in search of a man they wanted to kill.
"Mi spot di man dem a come up wit dem crome .45 an ting, an we juks ina one yard an guan penny dem...we see when dem look ina di yard, an den go pon di corner (intersection of Doech Road and 'Flour Mill road') an a look out," said an eyewitness.
Residents say a passing police jeep spotted the men and immediately opened fire on them. Police however, refute the residents claim, saying they were fired upon first. They also say that more men were present.
Police reports are that the team was travelling along Winward Road, when upon reaching on Doech Road, five armed men opened fire on them. They returned the fire, and in the melee one of the men was shot. The men ran off, but during a later search of the area, a man was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at hospital, and has been identified as Mashel Headley of Water Road, Rockfort.
Residents say that the incident stemmed from an ongoing war between men from 'Bottom Scheme,' and men from Barnes road and Doech Road.
DOUBLE MURDER
Later that night, a group of gunmen invaded a premises along St. Patrick Road (Rockfort), murdering two men. Dead are Jason Richard 'Brooksie' Bowen, 24, of St. Patrick's Road, and 17-year-old Terrence 'Diddy' McKenzie, of Mountain View Avenue.
Police say that at about 7:25 p.m., the men were at Bowen's home, when the gunmen invaded it. They opened fire and later Bowen and McKenzie were taken to hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.
East Kingston officers say they have beem closely policing the Rockfort area since the start of the violence, and say they will now double their efforts.
"We have strong police presence, and we have saturated all crossing over points...assistance is coming from mobile reserve, and we have the area under relative control," said Deputy Superintendent Steve McGregor, of the Elleston Road Police Station.
