THE TALENT THAT was show-cased at the recently held Kingston Rising Star auditions did not amuse judges Nadine Sutherland, Clyde McKenzie and Anthony Miller.
After contestant R034 sang her heart out, Nadine Sutherland was not very convinced, saying, "That was so sweet, but you had problems with that song, your voice is untrained, you have time to practice and come back next year."
Anthony Miller was interrupted just as he started to comment on the same contestant, as she pleaded for another chance. Miller stopped her in her tracks: "No, you're interrupting me."
Contestant P057, singing I Believe, managed to make a believer out of Miller, as his only comment after she completed the song was, "I believe you can sing."
Contestant P068 tried to spread her Fever but it didn't work.
Miller said, "That rendition was in no danger of giving me fever," while Nadine Sutherland was forced to ask, "What version of Fever was that?
An attempt by contestant G088 to do At Last fell way short of the target, as judges were still waiting for an experience.
"A big song like that, we're still waiting on the big moment," Sutherland said.
Killing Me Softly by contestant Y094 did not win much favour with the judges either as Miller said, "There were lots of flaws in that song."
SOFTEN BLOW
Sutherland, however, softened the blow, commenting, "You're like this talented person that needs to be harnessed."
When contestant Y097 pre-sented the title of his song, Gyal Ova Modda, the judges had a few nervous moments, but after hearing the song, it didn't really matter much.
"The impact that you made was very dramatic. That's about it," Miller said.
McKenzie agreed, saying, "One thing I know, you're not short on passion."
Finally, the quote of the day comes with this word of advice to anyone who dares to enter any form of talent search, try to come with fresh songs that are not too popular and are in danger of being repeated too many times, because the judges, after hearing these songs, started to shoot them down without a second thought.
Contestant R209, after singing So Sick for probably the hundredth time for the day, was greeted with this response.
"Apart from you sounding like a 'cry baby' (his stage name), I'm just - 'so sick' (the song's title) of that song," McKenzie said.
