THE POLICE HAVE often complained about the difficulty of policing high-rise buildings, however they continue to develop strategies to deal with this issue.
According to Mark Shields, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, the police have support from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in terms of providing air support when going into some of those areas.
POSSIBLE OBSTACLES
In addition he said the police often consider all possible obstacles such as high rise buildings, or hilly terrain which would affect their ability to do their work, when they are about to conduct an operation in an area.
He adds that architects and developers building high rise buildings should consider security issues such as lighting and eliminating areas that criminals might hide and prey on people.
Shields also suggested that a possible solution to the problem would also be to demolish some of the old high rise buildings, which have become hiding places for criminals, and turn them into more productive spaces or replacing them with low rise buildings.
