THE EDITOR, Madam:
It is with tremendous pleasure that I welcome the return of Mariah Carey alias "Mimi" to the billboard charts with the number one song - "We belong together" and the number two song "Shake it Off" making her the 5th artiste in musical history to have two consecutive songs in the top spots of the charts.
What Mariah has achieved gives credence to the adage - you can't keep a good man, or in this case a good woman - down.
Following the well - publicised story of a nervous breakdown, every one thought she had reached rock bottom after dominating the pop charts in the '90s.
Mariah Carey is no ordinary singer, having sold over 300 million records worldwide and chalking up over 18 number one singles making her the most successful female artiste of all times.
PROVE PROPHETIC
I can remember vividly, the first time I saw her music video "vision of love" which heralded her on the musical scene in 1990 and I said to myself then that a star was born. This was to prove prophetic because she won her first Grammy award as best new artiste of the year for her multi-platinum debut. In a career that seemed almost fairy tale, she married Tommy Mottola who was the CEO of Columbia Records and as they say, the rest was history or was it? In a dramatic twist the marriage later ended in divorce. For awhile she struggled career wise but like a true diva Mariah has returned in what is probably the comeback story of this year.
Mariah's case is an inspiration to many artistes as it shows that perseverance and hard work along with true talent will always yield success. Mariah is the all composite entertainer being a lyricist, composer, singer and producer par excellence. Being a woman, and biracial at that, could be seen as a negative in a male dominated music industry, but she has defied the odds and has certainly "shaken off" her defeated in what is a true "emancipation".
