Despite the 'throwback' in crowd turnout at the Throwback 80s and 90s party, held at Students Union, University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus on Saturday, this patron was intent on enjoying herself. - WINSTON SILL
THE CONSTANT POUR of rain last Saturday may have been the main factor that crippled the initial turnout of patrons to 'Throwback', the 80s, 90s party that was held at the University of the West Indies, Mona Student Union.
At 11:15 p.m. when THE STAR arrived at the venue, the voice of the selector could be heard quite clearly from the outside, "yow di people dem pon di outside jus line up uno self an come een."
There was only one problem- there were no persons on the outside.
On entering Students Union, the large empty space with only a handful of patrons sitting around the front, was an indication that the bad weather earlier in the day might have deterred persons from attending.
Early juggling lasted until after midnight, with tunes like Casanova and This Magic Moment, encouraging the handful of patrons to remain seated and liaise with their peers.
As the early morning hours started to approach, the vibes on the turntables intensified, but the crowd was still lacking.
Jazzy T from the Renaissance Disco, Johnny Cool from Zip FM, Chrome from Zip FM and DJ Billy from Bass XS were among the selectors who kept the 80s 90s music churning.
Remember the tunes on the Pepper Seed rhythm? Well those tracks had the few patrons dancing on the dance floor, and despite the low turnout, the patrons who had weathered the conditions, made the most of their time and money.
FAVOURABLE REACTIONS
From 80s and 90s dancehall tunes like Bounty's It's A Party, Simpleton's Quarter To Twelve and Beenie Man's Romie and Ghetto Slam, were spun along hip hop favourites, Gangster's Paradise, Gin And Juice (Snoop Dogg), Hate Me Now (Nas), Woa (Black Rob), One More Chance (Biggy) and Can I Get A... by Jay Z.
After getting the patrons all wound up, it was time to ease the tension, as the top three finalists in the University deejay competition took over on the turntables, and had ten minutes each during which to woo their audience.
DJ Brownie from Utech and DJ FBI from UWI squared off, each getting favourable reactions from the audience.
After the mini showing by the amateurs, it was time for Jazzy T and the Renaissance Crew to jazz up the party once more.
At the end of the night, patrons could not complain, as the musical vibes, mixed with a host of other attractions, including free jello shots, fashion village, food court and 2 for 1 Bacardi specials gave them a fun, overall experience.
