A 15-YEAR-OLD gunman who attempted to shoot a policeman, shot himself instead and later died after a robbery in Cross Roads, St. Andrew on Thursday.
Adrian Smart, was apparently not so brilliant as he unloaded his weapon in his groin as he pulled it from his waist. Smart and another 15-year-old youth, who is in police custody, were being chased by a policeman after a car robbery when the incident happened.
Police told THE STAR that at about 8:20 p.m. Smart and another youth, held up and robbed a taxi operator of his Toyota Corolla motor car at gunpoint on Caledonia Avenue in Cross Roads. Both robbers escaped in the vehicle but on reaching the intersection of Oxford and Old Hope Road, the car crashed.
The two fled the vehicle and were running down Oxford Road when a policeman in plain clothes observed them acting suspiciously and challenged them. It is reported that Smart attempted to pull a firearm from his waist band and accidentally shot himself in the groin.
He died on the spot.
The other 15 year-old youth, was apprehended and handed over to the Half-Way Tree police who are investigating.
The teen, who is from Hagley Park Road, Kingston 11, has been charged with robbery with aggravation and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
