TWO POLICE CONSTABLES charged with breaching the corruption act were granted bail in the sum of $500,000 when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court on Tuesday.
Constables George Paddyfoot and Adrian Douglas, the accused men who are a part of the Area Four police division appeared before Resident Magistrate Desiree Alleyne who granted them bail with one, two or three sureties.
It is alleged that on July 21, at about 8:30 p.m., the men accepted the sum of $1,700 from a motorist for not having a driver's license. Paddyfoot had allegedly told the complainant that his car could be seized and he could be fined $50,000 for the offence.
He then allegedly asked the motorist what he could do for himself and the complainant gave him $700 and then went to the ATM machine to get $1,000 which he gave to Douglas. The complainant wrote down the serial number of the $1,000 note before handing it to the officer.
The accused then called his uncle who was a police officer and who arranged a meeting between the complainant and the officers and a representative of the professional standards branch at the Hunts Bay Police Station.
The officers were questioned and the $1,000 with the same serial number was found on one of the officers. The officer from the Professional Standards Branch arrested the officers and charged them with breaches of the Corruption Act.
The officers' fingerprints were taken and they are to return to court on September 28.
